This means eating meals that are nutritious instead of hitting up all the junk foods. It&#8217;s true-their wellbeing and happiness depend upon it. While we&#8217;re not talking about putting your tuba on a weight-loss program or taking your trumpet to the spa for a makeover, you do need to treat your brass instruments with care or they&#8217;ll refuse to come out and play. So, grab that brass and get ready for a workout-it&#8217;s time to clean!<br/><br/>When was the last time you saw a dirty French Horn in the orchestra? Probably never, right? That&#8217;s because professional musicians know how to take daily, monthly, and yearly care of their instruments. Now&#8217;s your chance to do the same! Starting with daily care, follow these tips to maintain the health and beauty of your brass.<br/><br/>Note: Because brass instruments vary, be sure to learn the specific cleaning methods for your particular instrument. For example, rotor instruments like the French horns, rotor tubas, and rotor trombones should always be cleaned by an experienced repairperson.<br/><br/>Once a week, lubricate the valves on your brass instrument. Simply unscrew the valve cap and draw out the valve half way. Using the appropriate lubricant, apply a drop of valve oil to the widest part of the valve. Then, press the valve back to its original position. The valves on most brass instruments have a &#8220;guide&#8221; that helps you to line up the valve. Most often, you&#8217;ll hear a *click* when you&#8217;ve got the valve perfectly aligned.<br/><br/>If you play a brass instrument, you know what happens after a good session of blowing. You know, &#8220;moisture&#8221; can build up inside of your instrument. If it&#8217;s not removed, this moisture can do a real number on the health of your instrument. To be sure you&#8217;ve removed all moisture from your instrument after you&#8217;re done playing, you&#8217;ll want do a final blow with the water keys opened. This should help to keep the insides of your instruments happy and dry.<br/><br/>No Fingerprints Please<br/><br/>To keep your brass shining, be sure to wipe down the outside of the instrument after each use. This will help remove oils and perspiration left by your hands.<br/><br/>To spare your brass from unsightly &#8220;bruises,&#8221; be sure to always store your instrument in its case when its not being used. Doing so will not only spare your brass from damage, but it&#8217;ll also keep your instrument clean. Remember, your instrument case is for your instrument; storing music books, cleaning supplies, or even your lunch inside the case can lead to all kinds of problems with the slides or valves of your instrument.<br/><br/>Once A Month It&#8217;s Thorough Internal Cleaning Time<br/><br/>To do this, you&#8217;ll need to take your brass apart completely. You&#8217;ll also need some supplies, including cleaning brushes, liquid soap, slide grease (if your instrument has slides), and valve oil. If you&#8217;re not comfortable with any of these steps, take your instrument to a music shop for a professional cleaning to keep it in tip top shape.<br/><br/>Head to your bathroom or kitchen sink and get ready to get dirty!<br/><br/>Remove all slides, valves and valve bottom caps and place them, except for the valves, in warm, soapy water. Soak the parts in the water for 10 minutes As your parts are soaking, run warm water over your valves and use the valve brush to brush out all openings. Give your valves a good shake to remove excess water and let dry Depending on your type of instrument, you&#8217;ll want to brush all its tubes and compartments as well as the valve casings Rinse the entire instrument with warm water and be sure to wipe off any excess moisture with a soft cloth. Before moving on to the next step, you&#8217;ll want to make sure your instrument is completely dry If your instrument has slides, apply a little slide grease to each and put back together reassemble Replace the valves and apply a drop of oil on each to lubricate. Most valves are numbered, so be sure to put yours back in the correct location<br/><br/>Voila! You&#8217;re done. You can now go slide that trombone or toot that trumpet to your heart&#8217;s content. Because you treated your brass with cleanly attention, it&#8217;ll serve up beautiful music for years to come! They often tread a fine line between health and illness or injury.<br/><br/>1) Listen to your body. As you are training it is easy to become preoccupied with the repetitions you are doing, or the time you have been exercising. Leave your watch at home and slow down or walk when your body hurts- but on the same note do not be afraid to push yourself, the gym should not be a leisurely walk in the park if you are wanted to get sculpted. You must learn you understand your body<br/><br/>2) To improve your fitness health you need to eat a varied diet. Five fruit and vegetables a day should be your minimum target. Your health will improve if you eat at least five different kinds of fruit, then any vegetables will be a bonus.<br/><br/>3) Take a complete day off from exercise every once in a while. It does not have to be every week, but doing extra training when you are tired may have a detrimental effect on your health and fitness. You become fitter and healthier through rest as much as exercise. My off day is generally Sunday<br/><br/>4) For muscle increase up protein intake: make sure every meal includes good protein sources: lean meats, poultry, seafood, dairy, and beans are great examples. Do no be afraid to include protein shakes in your diet: WHEY is a great source and it takes awesome<br/><br/>5) Understand technique before trying anything new. This will insure that you will not cause injury and you will maximize the results you want. If you have questions consult a gym professional or another reliable source.<br/><br/>6) You will improve your health and fitness by stretching more. Your muscles get shorter through exercise, and if you never stretch you will get injured. One method is to warm up slowly first, then spend several minutes stretching before the main workout. Stretch thoroughly after exercise as well.<br/><br/>7) You need to stay hydrated if you are exercising more. This means drinking water and sports drinks if you are sweating a lot. You lose minerals in your body while sweating. It is recommended to drink five glasses of water a day, but if you are working out you need to drink more than this. Do not get carried away, though, because it can be just as dangerous to drink too much as too little.<br/><br/> <img src='http://www.cofcsds.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif' alt='8)' class='wp-smiley' /> Exercise with other people. You will meet new friends, and your fitness will improve if you have other people to motivate you.<br/><br/>9) Do not become too competitive as this may harm your health. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br/><br/>As our bodies grow older, so too rises the importance of maintaining or improving our health and fitness levels. In order for us to lessen our chances of contracting any unpleasant ailments (the likelihood of which obviously increases alongside our age), and indeed to increase our chances and speed of a full recovery if we are so unfortunate to be subjected to any such problems &#8211; it is important that we are in as fit and healthy a state as possible.<br/><br/>There are some very basic but nevertheless important tips that we should all bear in mind, that are even more important to us the older we get. Here are a few to consider.<br/><br/>Get sufficient sleep<br/><br/>Sleep and rest are important to every human (and indeed all other living organisms) regardless of age. As we grow older and our overall energy levels begin to drop however, so too drops our bodies ability to heal as effectively as it used to. What this translates into is the increased need of longer periods of sleep, or indeed more frequent naps.<br/><br/>The tendency for many aging individuals is to push themselves harder as a way of revolting against their naturally increasing need of more rest. Unfortunately, whilst exercise is good and one cannot be knocked for ones determination and morale in such a case, this can often have a detrimental effect on ones health in the longer term. Provide your body with the time and environment it needs in order to replenish and heal itself (between plenty of exercise, of course), and the chances that you will be rewarded with better health will be much improved.<br/><br/>Eat better than ever<br/><br/>You probably thought that the days of hearing the words &#8220;eat your greens&#8221; were gone with your childhood, but that is absolutely not the case. Just as we need to be sure we eat well when we are young so that we are provided with ample nutrients necessary for our bodies growth, we need to be doubly sure we are eating well when we are aging, but for different reasons.<br/><br/>As we get older our metabolisms slow down and so our bodies aren&#8217;t as quick or effective at breaking our food down into pure energy, or indeed at processing food at all. Indeed, unhealthy fatty foods such as takeaways and foods which in general lack sufficient nutritional value can have a much increased detrimental effect on us. Those who are older are more at risk of experiencing the ill-side effects of having an unhealthy diet than those who are young, and have less of a chance of reversing any problems once they occur. That makes it vastly important that we adopt a more strict and healthy diet as we get older.<br/><br/>Exercise more<br/><br/>Another tip no less significant to any of us regardless of age, but certainly more vital to remember the older we get (since we have a tendency to do less of it), is exercise. Our bodies will naturally deteriorate during periods of inactivity but the increased risk of physical problems across the board which age will inevitably bring about are encouraged yet more (and the rate of deterioration happens much faster) if we become lazy and idle. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br/><br/>Baby Boomers, there is a reason to continue flossing your teeth every day. If it wasn&#8217;t a regular routine in your past, make it so, now.<br/><br/>Gum disease, also known as gingivitis, is a serious condition that will normally result in tooth loss. With adults, gingivitis and periodontal disease are the most common forms of gum disease. To prevent both types of gum disease, you should always brush your teeth and remove as much plaque as possible. If you allow the plaque to build up, gum disease will normally be the result.<br/><br/>Gingivitis is known as inflammation in the tissues of the gums. If plaque and tartar build up along the gum line, the gums will eventually get swollen and irritated. Over time, the gums will get very tender and start to appear puffy. When you brush your teeth, you&#8217;ll notice that your gums have become very sore and they will start to bleed with little to no pressure. If you notice blood when brushing, chances are you have gingivitis. Anytime you brush your teeth or floss, there should not be any sign of blood.<br/><br/>During this stage of gingivitis, there is no loss of bone structure. You can help to prevent gingivitis though, through flossing and brushing a few times a day. If you have gingivitis and you don&#8217;t do something about it, it could lead to periodontal disease. Those who don&#8217;t treat gingivitis or those who keep poor oral hygiene habits, will normally end up with periodontal disease where bone is actually destroyed. This damage cannot be reversed!<br/><br/>So no matter how much retirement fun you are having, take the time to brush and floss your teeth and visit your dentist regularly. This is one of the many &#8220;secrets&#8221; to making your &#8220;second adult life&#8221; the best years ever.<br/><br/>A final note: I know some people have not been to a dentist in years. Whether out of fear, a bad experience or any other excuse, you need to give it another try. This is for your health and happiness. I think you will find modern dentistry has changed a lot in the past decade or two.<br/><br/>I purposely avoided writing about Baby Boomer health issues because I wanted to cover nothing but positive, uplifting, &#8220;second adult life&#8221; topics. But is seems that after 40 and definitely after 50, Boomers have questions and want to share all the new and sometimes unpleasant things happening to their bodies. While this may not be true it is certainly the image which is promoted in the media. This focus on the beautiful people of the world has ignited a thriving beauty industry.<br/><br/>Nail salons are opening in large quantities all around the world. Although women make up the majority of the clientele in these establishments, men are also flocking to salons and spas for manicures and pedicures. Manicures and pedicures used to be considered luxury treatments reserved for special occasions such as weddings and other formal events but today many women visit salons weekly for nail care treatments.<br/><br/>Nails aren’t the only part of the body get a great deal of attention lately. Gleaming white teeth have become an asset desired, and achieved through treatments, by many. Both over the counter whitening products and dentist performed procedures are becoming increasingly popular. These products and procedures help people to obtain a coveted bright smile. <br />Salons and spas are also offering services and treatments to help individuals gain desired hairstyles. These treatments and services can help a person to achieve a completely different look. Those with short hair can have hair extensions, made with real hair, attached to create the illusion of longer hair. This can have the result of creating a dramatic effect. The extensions can be either very natural looking or completely outrageous. Hair straighteners are also popular options for those who want straight locks. It is also a time when many people decide to travel.<br/><br/>This is a great time to vacation since; you are not necessarily tied to a specific date for your return. One of the biggest concerns, however, is that there are often health issues that keep people from traveling, <br />as they would like.<br/><br/>Still, there are ways to take care of yourself and take your dream vacation. It just involves paying special attention to your health needs, and a little preparation before embarking on the trip of a lifetime. Below are some health and safety tips that will point you in the right direction.<br/><br/>Be sure you are clear on all of your necessary medication. No matter what time zone you are in, make certain you take your medication at the regularly appointed time, and that you are diligent in doing so. Whether you travel by car, plane, or bus, this is still a crucial part of your everyday routine, so be sure it receives the proper attention.<br/><br/>Know how your insurance works in different parts of the country, or even the world. If you are unsure about what your insurance will cover, and where it will and won’t cover it, ask your carrier to provide you with this information. Make sure you understand it before leaving for your trip. This is still very important even if you do not have a pre-existing health condition.<br/><br/>If you find that it does not, consider purchasing a short-term health insurance policy that will help you should you need it.
